Before I ever structured my first equipment note, I spent years in aviation, an industry built entirely on systems, precision, and the understanding that every decision has consequences. In aviation, you don't guess. You follow a process, verify your data, and trust the framework you've built. That mindset shaped everything when I entered the world of private lending.
But the real turning point started with a vending machine.
While managing a small regional airport, I wanted to build cash flow outside of my salary. I started a vending route, grew it to over 20 machines, and eventually began selling machines outright. The natural next step was financing them. When I went looking for clear, accessible resources on how equipment financing worked from the lender's perspective, I couldn't find them. Not in a form built for someone who wasn't already inside a financial institution.
So I built what I needed. And then I turned it into this.
Today I teach people at every stage of that journey. Through Micro Monies, I help aspiring micro-business owners get started with vending and other small income-producing ventures, because I believe real financial growth starts with small, strategic moves that compound over time. Can I use my Self-Directed IRA (SDIRA) to fund equipment notes after completing this course?
This is one of the most common questions we receive, and it's a great one.
Many private lenders do use SDIRAs to fund equipment notes, as it can be a tax-advantaged way to deploy capital. However, SDIRA rules are also complex and vary based on your specific account type and custodian.
The academy will introduce you to this concept as part of the curriculum, but we strongly recommend consulting with a qualified SDIRA custodian or tax professional before using retirement funds for any lending activity.
What happens if a borrower defaults on an equipment note?
Default is a real risk in any lending scenario, and we address it directly in the curriculum.
Equipment-backed lending has a key advantage: the loan is secured by physical collateral: the equipment itself.
In a default scenario, the lender typically has the right to repossess and liquidate the equipment to recover their capital.
The academy teaches you how to structure deals, conduct due diligence, and assess collateral value in ways that minimize your exposure to default risk. Understanding this process is a core part of becoming a confident lender.
How long will it take to complete the academy?
The curriculum is self-paced (with exception to the live sessions - these are recorded and available to you as replays), so the timeline is entirely up to you.
Most students who dedicate a few hours per week can complete the core modules within 6–10 weeks.
However, because you have lifetime access, there's no pressure to rush.
Students can revisit specific modules as they begin applying what they've learned in real lending scenarios.
Will I be ready to do my first deal after completing the course?
